A FIREWORK is believed to have started a fire which left a flat in Aspley gutted.

The blaze started at a first floor flat in Wendover Drive at around 4.40pm yesterday.

The firework is believed to have gone through the kitchen window.

The fire spread from the kitchen to the rest of the flat, leaving it severely damaged.

The property also suffered smoke damage.

The man living in the flat was able to get out and call emergency services.

No one was injured but a cat and a kitten are believed to have been killed by smoke fumes.

Firefighters from Stockhill and Central stations were called out and were at the scene for around an hour.

Police were also at the scene.

Inspector Dave Shardlow, from Notts Police, said: "The first floor flat was well-alight when the fire service got there."

The fire service was last night investigating the incident.
