Asbo threat to boy, 12, for riding scooter on pavement
A WOMAN has criticised police after she was sent a letter about her 12-year-old son riding his push scooter on the pavement.
The letter told Vicki Richardson that if officers were called because her son, Thomas Read, was riding his scooter again he could be given an asbo.

Police sent a letter to the mother of Thomas Read
She has written to Hucknall Police Station about the letter as her son now thinks he will get into trouble if he goes out to play.
A police spokesman said the action was part of their policy to control anti-social behaviour.

“We do have to uphold the law but this is going over the top. Has this lad been in trouble before!!! and why is an asbo the answer.”

“Nice easy job for the police, no chance of them being attacked, good for the figures on detected crime....everyones a winner, especially the real criminals!”

“I know the lads in this article and they are good kids, there are 4 or 5 of them, they like to play out when the weather is fit rather than sit indoors all day on consoles. They are very polite when spoken to and not harmful in any way, I would be happy for my slightly younger son to play out with them. Most of them go to sports/drama clubs, scouts, football several nights a week but they do need some freedom to play and interact with their peers.
I pity the woman who put the complaint in , does she not remember her own childhood? Kids have ridden bikes, scooters, skates in the streets for decades! Please lets not go back to the Victorian idea of children being seen but not heard! What should children of this age do?”

“Dear Insp. Plod,
The family in question have since received an apology from the police saying that the letter was inappropriate.
The 'postees' know what really went on, NOT you! Where do you suggest kids play??”
