Asbo threat to boy, 12, for riding scooter on pavement
A WOMAN has criticised police after she was sent a letter about her 12-year-old son riding his push scooter on the pavement.
The letter told Vicki Richardson that if officers were called because her son, Thomas Read, was riding his scooter again he could be given an asbo.

Police sent a letter to the mother of Thomas Read
She has written to Hucknall Police Station about the letter as her son now thinks he will get into trouble if he goes out to play.
A police spokesman said the action was part of their policy to control anti-social behaviour.

“We do have to uphold the law but this is going over the top. Has this lad been in trouble before!!! and why is an asbo the answer.”

“Nice easy job for the police, no chance of them being attacked, good for the figures on detected crime....everyones a winner, especially the real criminals!”

“I know the lads in this article and they are good kids, there are 4 or 5 of them, they like to play out when the weather is fit rather than sit indoors all day on consoles. They are very polite when spoken to and not harmful in any way, I would be happy for my slightly younger son to play out with them. Most of them go to sports/drama clubs, scouts, football several nights a week but they do need some freedom to play and interact with their peers.
I pity the woman who put the complaint in , does she not remember her own childhood? Kids have ridden bikes, scooters, skates in the streets for decades! Please lets not go back to the Victorian idea of children being seen but not heard! What should children of this age do?”

“Dear Insp. Plod,
The family in question have since received an apology from the police saying that the letter was inappropriate.
The 'postees' know what really went on, NOT you! Where do you suggest kids play??”

“I am absolutely amazed, at some of the silly comments posted below.
Obviously, there is much more to this article, than is reported.
If the Police mention issuing an ASBO, then they have good reason to do so.
By hastening to pass stupid comments, the postee's ridicule themselves, NOT THE POLICE!!....
Naeivity comes to mind!.”

“Here we go again,an abbreviated report,in order to sensationalize it..when ,if ever; are we going to get some factual, honest ,reporting by the NEP ?”

“They'd rather the child ride his scooter on the road? Or that he stayed inside and played videogames until his chair buckled?”

“The law is the law, and must be upheld, and riding scooters and cycles on the pavement is illegal so action must be taken.
This does seem extremely heavy handed as a word with the parents would surely suffice.
Is there more to this story? has there been an incident where someone has been knocked down and injured, or have the Police found a way of introducing it into their crime statistics to make their figures more impressive.”

“I also live in underwood and we have asked the council for over 10 years to build a skate park for the kids but nothing, the other areas get them but not us, we all pay the same,
All the children of underwood are not bad or criminals they come from good families that know where they are at all times, the child in question was playing with friends on their own street - children make noise thats life but sending letter out claiming this leads to alcoholism and vandalism is wrong - it is all to easy now to pick the phone up and use todays buzz word *anti social* and the police come surely they should be out catching proper criminals and not kids playing. A word in the ear from a copper in my day was enough to send you on your way. Not all children are crimincals please remember that.”
