The men, who wore dark clothing and hooded tops, made off on foot along Wilford Lane towards the Silverdale island.

The victim, 31, was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with minor head injuries, and has now been discharged.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been driving or walking past the petrol station around the time of the robbery.

DC Parm Dhillon, from the Meadows CID, said: “I’m confident that early risers will have passed the service station at this time and I urge anyone with information to come forward.

“You may have seen someone acting suspiciously, or perhaps you saw someone carrying a large bags or bundles in the aftermath of the robbery.

“We know they made off on foot but they may well have left the area in a vehicle as they stole a considerable amount of cigarettes that would have been difficult to carry.

“Again, I would appeal to anyone who saw a man or men carrying large bundles in the Wilford area early this morning – the information you provide could be vitally important to our investigation.”

Anyone with information should contact Notts Police on 101, quoting incident number 62 of 25 April 2012.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
