On the run: Wayne Green, also known as Stephen Cross.
Green, also known as Stephen Cross, is wanted for allegedly breaching a violent offender order that was imposed when he was released from prison in August 2010.
Neighbours in Acton Road said five police cars arrived outside a mid-terraced house where Green was rumoured to be living.
The road was cordoned off for more than an hour on Tuesday as a police helicopter circled above and crowds gathered to watch.
Green was not found and no other arrests were made.
Alan Hulse, 74, of Sandiacre, was helping his daughter Sarah move into a flat in Acton Road.
He said: "The police let me get the van with my daughter's possessions and I had to drive it on the kerb to get it out because of the blockage."
Joan Mimms, of nearby Oakley's Road, was told about the police swoop by her next-door neighbour. She said: "I looked out of the window and I could see that Acton Road was blocked by a police van with its flashing lights going.
"I had heard that there was a man the police wanted."
Police have warned people not to approach Green, of no fixed address, who was described as "violent and dangerous".
A £1,000 reward was also put up for information which led to his arrest.
At the time, the violent offender order was the first of its kind in Derbyshire.
It was issued to prevent Green from approaching or contacting a number of people, as well as restricting him from entering Long Eaton.
The order lasts for five years and was imposed at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court after Green was released from prison after a five-year term for a serious assault. He could be fined or jailed if found to have breached the order.
Derbyshire police said: "We can confirm that this was part of the operation to find Wayne Green. We'd received information that he might be in a house in Acton Road but we did not find him."
