AN ANIMAL rescue centre fears it could go bust unless it gets more cash and volunteers.

Puppies Animal Rescue, in Bestwood Village, is appealing for people to help out with fund-raising events.

The organisation, which is based in Moor Road, also needs sponsorship to help it continue looking after unwanted cats and dogs.

Founder Sheila Cooke said the service was 75% down on funds compared to Christmas last year.

The centre, which is in the process of becoming a registered charity, currently looks after seven dogs and five feral cats, but has room for 16.

Sheila, who founded the centre with Rikki Hawkins four years ago, said: "We are struggling for survival. We are finding it very difficult to keep going.

"We are taking in a lot of animals that have been ill-treated. Some of them won't be re-homed because they were too badly treated.

"We have got some dogs that people no longer want because they are too old.

"We are renting property and every month we are having to raise funds just to pay the rent and buy food.

"It just seems a lot harder since last Christmas.

"It is harder to raise the money."

The centre, which has three staff, organises fund-raising events to make ends meet.

Recent ideas included an evening with medium Darren Brittain, at Kettlebrook Lodge, Kimberley.

The centre is also holding a Christmas fair in Papplewick on December 5 and 6.

The fair, at the Griffin's Head, will include craft and gift stalls and there will also be the chance to fire-walk.

A team of experts will show sponsored volunteers how to get across burning coals.

The centre wants to organise more fun events and is appealing for volunteers.

Sheila, who is also approaching Notts councils for help, said: "We desperately need volunteers.

"It is difficult when there is just three of you.

"We are finding it more difficult to raise the money. The money that has been raised has gone to pay for food and rent.

"The more people there are the more ideas we have got.

"It also brings in more people. Word gets around."
