THE ambulance service for Notts is being stretched to crisis point, it is claimed – with one in six workers signed off sick with stress.

The stark warning comes as figures showed 477 people out of a total workforce of 2,700 were signed off for this reason in one year.

Senior paramedic Alan Marwood, 61, who is in charge of three ambulance stations in Notts – and who was signed off with stress for 13 weeks after being called out to a lorry crash which killed two young men – said: "We are dealing with more calls, and the expectation on people's shoulders is greater. "It feels like we're being stretched to more than breaking point."

The East Midlands Ambulance Service says the number of 999 calls it has received has steadily increased, with 776,083 being made in 2011-12. It is employing more frontline staff and helping staff cope.

“Digby, the stress faced by ambulance crews is very different than the "normal" stresses you highlight. They are facing life and death situations every day and the nature of their work has changed dramatically over the years. They are required to have a far higher level of expertise and under constant threat of legal action. They are threatened, assaulted and even have to face a threat of theft from their vehicles whilst they are saving lives. I am not surprised when they are diagnosed as suffering from stress.”

“If you ask any company or business there will be people off work with stress.
With people not having as much disposable income as they had several years ago because of no wage rises, higher bills for Electricity,Gas,Diesel and Petrol, shopping for everyday items has got more expensive because of high fuel prices.
People losing there jobs because of the recession and then being told they will not be getting any help from the government to help and the only breadwinner in the house having to pay for everything.
People at work are giving heavier workloads because employers cannot afford to hire more staff and they then get stressed and then going off work sick.
I could carry on and give more reasons but I am getting stressed out and going for a lie down.”
