TENOR saxophonist Dave O'Higgins is a stunning player in the neo-bop vein. He is the featured guest for Jazz At Dexter's in the Five Ways Hotel, Edwards Lane/Valley Road, Sherwood, on Tuesday. Originally from Derby, O'Higgins learned trumpet, drums and piano at school and played drums with local bands and the Derbyshire Youth Jazz Orchestra. He started on saxophone at 16 and was self-taught. In 1983 he moved to London to study music at the City University and at the same time joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Since his NYJO days he has worked with Cleo Laine, Roadside Picnic and Mezzoforte, Jim Mullen, Ray Charles, Martin Taylor, Itchy Fingers, Frank Sinatra, Salif Keita, Jimmy Smith, Joe Locke, Kyle Eastwood, Jamie Cullum, Stan Tracey, Matthew Herbert, Chico Chagas and the BBC Big Band to name only a few. His cites his greatest influences as Charlie Parker, Stanley Turrentine, Bob Mintzer and Michael Brecker.

NOTTINGHAM Jazz Orchestra, playing as well as ever, is being enthusiastically received at its new headquarters in the Federation Club, Claremont Street, where it plays its next regular monthly concert on Sunday evening. The club was the venue for some great jazz in the 1980s when it was known as the Ukraine Club. Also on Sunday afternoon the very popular Ben Martin Quartet plays the lunchtime gig at the Lion.

JAZZ at Nottingham's Bell Inn on Angel Row continues on Sunday lunchtimes with The Footwarmers but the Monday evening sessions will now be shared among a wider variety of local outfits. This coming Monday will feature the Johnny Johnstone Quintet.

FOR traditionalists the Millennium Eagle Jazz Band, led by reedman Matt Palmer, will play Priory Jazz, Nanpantan Road, Loughborough, on Thursday. Also on Thursday, the Spirit of New Orleans Jazz Band are at Sutton-in-Ashfield's Unwin Road Jazz Club. Formed in 2006 the band is a regular at many venues in South Yorkshire and although the band favours a relaxed New Orleans style its repertoire includes Jelly Roll, Satchmo, Bix and Bunk, with occasional forays into the works of Ellington, Basie and Fats Waller.
