PLAYING the Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts Centre on Wednesday is Trichotomy one of Australia's most inventive contemporary music ensembles. With Sean Foran (piano), John Parker (drums) and Pat Marchisella (bass), Trichotomy has proved much more than a conventional jazz trio by expanding the capacities of the classic piano/bass/drums combination with elements of the avant-garde. Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Aphex Twin to Vijay Iyer and Tortoise to The Bad Plus, Trichotomy's music combines a dense rhythmic focus with the melodic clarity of a Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau and like fellow Australians, The Necks; cited as an early influence.

THE Theatre Royal's Foyer Bar is the scene on Monday evening for a session by the John Turville Trio. Originally from Nottingham, pianist Turville has built up a great reputation by working with Gilad Atzmon, Tim Garland, Dog Soup and aided by Chris Hill (bass) and Ben Reynolds (drums). His excellent trio will promote the music from its latest album, Conception. Reynolds is a versatile and in-demand percussionist regularly performing with Clare Teal, Joe Stilgoe and Parliamentary Award Winners, the Sam Crockatt Quartet. Hill is probably the busiest bass player in the UK. He is currently touring with Jamie Cullum and has played for some major pop artists including Damon Albarn and Katie Melua. In the jazz world, he has appeared with the Mingus Big Band, Joe Stilgoe, Martin Taylor, Gilad Atzmon, Stacey Kent and Dylan Howe.

SAXOPHONIST John Marshall's Milestones Quintet, Nottingham's hard-bop specialists and a group of musicians steeped in the Blue Note style, play for Jazz At Dexter's in Sherwood's Five Ways Hotel on Tuesday.

THURSDAY'S Unwin Road Jazz Club visitors, the Yorkshire Stompers, make the relatively short trip to Sutton-in-Ashfield. The Stompers were formed in 1992 by Tony Scriven, who played drums with Monty Sunshine. The band played regularly at the Adelphi in Leeds, home of the original Yorkshire Jazz Band and includes Tony Smith (trumpet), Frank Brooker (clarinet and tenor sax) and Annie Hawkins (bass).
