NINETY-FIVE new jobs will be created when two JD Wetherspoon pubs open in Nottingham on Friday.

The pub giant is splashing out £1.8 million on transforming old buildings in Carlton and Sherwood.

Most of the cash has been spent on The Free Man, which will open on the site of a former Co-op store in Carlton Hill.

There will be 45 staff, either part-time or full-time. The renovation has cost £1.14 million.

Manager Cara Roblin said: "It is great that we are opening in Carlton. The new jobs will be a big boost to the area."

The remaining £670,000 has been spent on revamping the former Oak Tree pub in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, turning it into The Samuel Hall, with 50 jobs being created.

Photos and information boards relating to the history and characters of the area will be displayed in the pubs. Wetherspoon already runs eight pubs in and around Nottingham, including The Roebuck Inn and The Company Inn, in the city centre, and The Woodthorpe Top in Mapperley.

Company spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "It is sad that many pubs are closing down in Nottingham. But we feel we offer a good service to our customers, with well-trained staff. JD Wetherspoon has often been a leader in introducing things into our pubs, including the smoking ban and all-day food.

"It will be another big boost to the area as well, with 95 jobs being created."

Mr Gershon said the firm, founded by former University of Nottingham student Tim Martin in the 1970s, was looking to open more pubs.

One of these will be the old Wilkinson building in Bulwell, which it already owns.

"If we see an area we like, then we will look into opening there," said Mr Gershon. "We are always looking to see what more we can offer."

Mike Knight, of Nottingham City Pub, Club and Hotel Watch, said: "Good luck to JD Wetherspoon on opening a new pub. The rate of pub closures in Nottingham is slowing down a little and it is always good to see more opening."

“Why are so many Pubs going out of Business ?
    The Smoking Ban.
Nottingham needs more cheap cafes like Wetherspoons.
Reform the smoking ban to allow All people choice and we can save our Real Pubs.”

“Creating 50 jobs! What about the jobs that were lost when they took over the oak tree and shut it down. Also no comment about them applying to get a 7am drinks licence in a major residential area near to primary schools. No garden or on-site smoking area leaving the old drunks smoking on the main road at 8.30am rather than the other local pubs which are decent enough to wait till 10 or 11. Great advertising for them mind you, well done NEP”
