Dozens of plants stolen from village pond
MORE than 50 plants believed to be worth around £500 have been stolen from a pond in Wilford.
The shrubs were planted around Iremongers Pond about two months ago after the Environment Agency put in a channel linking the pond to the river as part of a flood alleviation scheme.

But in the last few weeks the shrubs – of which there are believed to have been 50 or 60 – have been pulled out and removed, leaving just nine.
"It's just frustrating that you are taking three steps forward and then slipping back when you are trying to do something for the good of the community," said Bill Roughton, secretary on the Iremongers pond association.
"Now every single shrub has been removed from the southern edge of the pond. It looks like the surface of the moon really with all those potholes."
PC Nigel Brown, beat manager for Wilford and Silverdale, said: "I believe these were stolen with the intention of selling them on, or perhaps putting them in their own garden. I think it's wholesale theft rather than vandalism.
"It's a real shame for the community as they have done an awful lot of work there tidying it up."

“There were 2 incidents of vandalism & theft, Joy. In the first incident, perhaps a dozen new shrubs were uprooted, and thrown onto the ice. I retrieved almost all these, and replanted them. A couple of weeks later, someone came along and took the lot. I've searched the pond, its banks, and the exit to the river - no trace - they've gone. All for what? 30p a plant in some dodgy pub?”

“I thought it was disgusting that all the new plants had been removed, but I think rather than them having been stolen, they are all on the bottom of the pond. One morning as I was walking the dog, and the pond was frozen over, I could not figure out what all the items were on the ice. As I got closer I realised they were all the new plants. Obviously some people had pulled them all out and had thrown them into the middle. As they were too far on to retrieve, I presume as the ice thawed they sank.Another act of senseless vandalism.”
