NOTTINGHAM was awash with Santas yesterday as hundreds of people raised money for charity.

About 250 people donned the familiar red and white suit for the Great Nottingham Santa Run at Wollaton Park.

The event was held to raise money for When You Wish Upon A Star, which makes dreams come true for ill children.

Entrants set off at 10.30am to the sound of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day on the loud speaker and walked or ran 5km around the park.

"I'm taking part because one of my friend's sons has got cystic fibrosis," said Lee Harmston, 36, from the city centre.

"It is great to see so many people getting in the festive mood and dressing as Santa, and all to raise money for a good cause."

Kimberly Owen, 28, of Wollaton, took part with her eight-month-old daughter Rose and friend Rachel Dennis, 28.

She said: "I really wanted to raise money for charity and this is a great way of doing it. It's good fun, dressing as Santa."

Joseph Wood, 23, of Bestwood Park, said: "I'm here with my mates. It's a great idea to raise money for charity."

A similar number took part in the one-mile Santa Stroll around the city centre to raise money for the Notts Hospice.

They set off from the Brian Clough statue and were accompanied by members of Notts County's first-team squad and manager Martin Allen.
