BOTH Nottingham football clubs were celebrating victories that preserved unbeaten records.

Notts County, with five points from three matches, stood jointly on top of the Fourth Division. Meanwhile Forest, with seven points from five games, were level with Derby County in the First Division.

Ronnie Rees and Henry Newton were the stars for Forest as they beat Wolves 4-1 at the City Ground. The Reds went a goal down after four minutes but dominated the later stages of the match, scoring three second-half goals.

Meanwhile, Notts County's Jon Nixon scored the only goal of the match at Aldershot. The Magpies were praised for their calmness in defence whenever Aldershot threatened danger. David Needham and Brian Stubbs effectively shackled Aldershot's leading scorer Jack Howarth as well as Denis Oakes and player-manager Jimmy Melia.

"Notts never allowed us to create one really clear-cut chance," Melia said.

Organisers of the Miners' Welfare Festival at Berry Hill, Mansfield, were disappointed by the estimated crowd of 10,000 on a sunny day. Nevertheless, there was a full programme and judging in the open dog show lasted more than eight hours after attracting 1,084 entries.

Twenty-two pre-war vehicles took part in a vintage car rally.

The oldest models, an Austin 7 saloon and a flat-nosed Morris Cowley, dated from 1928.

A 1923 Norton motorcycle was also displayed.

There were only 11 entries in the pit pony competition, evidence that the number of animals used underground had dropped considerably from previous years.

They were all due to be withdrawn by the following year.

The section for ponies of 12.2 hands was won by 13-year-old Dot, from Annesley Colliery, who had worked in Notts pits for eight years but was competing for the first time. It was also an initial success for the handler, Mr R.B. Corbett, who hoped to have the pony when it was retired.
