GREAT cricketers were to descend on the City Police Training Ground in Carrington for the most important of Johnny Clay's testimonial fund matches.

Providing the opposition to Clay's XI would be a star-studded Rothman's Cavaliers side bristling with former Test players. And they would be led by two of the games great personalities, former Kent and England man Godfrey Evans and West Indies bowling legend Sonny Ramadhin.

Ramadhin was still playing in the Central Lancashire League at the time. Other Test stars in the side included Tom Graveney, Cyril Washbrook, Brian Statham, Basil D'Olivera, New Zealander Tom Prichard and one seasoned hometown bowler, Bill Voce.

MORE than 50 Bulwell businesspeople, shopkeepers and householders attended a public meeting where they unanimously decided to oppose a new development plan.

The meeting had been called by the local Chamber of Trade. The official plan was overwhelmingly rejected and heavily criticised. One critic described it as a "sort of giant and appalling traffic island".

Group secretary Mr F. Bains explained that the plan consisted of four shopping precincts each with road access from the rear, primarily for loading and unloading, and each with parking facilities.

Mr Baines said that if the shopkeepers were of one mind and watched developments they could "barricade" Bulwell against the land speculators.
