THOUSANDS more Notts pensioners will get health checks and help at home to stop them falling and breaking their bones.

Up to 63,000 people who are at risk will be assessed.

Nearly 600 over-65s were taken to hospital with fractured hips last year.

Notts' rate is one of the worst in the country – and its ageing population means the number of fractures will rise if nothing is done.

NHS Notts County will now spend an extra £2.2m a year on:

Carrying out more assessments – including reviews of medication – on up to 63,000 people who could be at risk of falling.

Adapting up to 4,000 people's homes to cut the number of hazards which could trip them up, meaning they are more confident moving around.

A home exercise programme led by a community rehabilitation team to improve health for up to 11,500 people.

Bosses hope it will cut the number of falls but also increase people's independence, mobility and balance.

NHS falls expert Nikki Hughes said: "Falls involving older people are a huge issue for Nottinghamshire and a major cause of disability, loss of independence and mortality. The county has amongst the highest rates of falls and hip fractures in the UK, and many could be prevented."

“Meeki its your right to ask for, demand an XRay other than that pay a £100 and see a consultant privately. I did got on his NHS list and had both hips resurfaced. Don't put up with pain, no need.”

“My Mum (83 at the time) was supposed to get these home-checks over 10 years ago. She only got one. When she was really ill the doctor would not come out and see her. She was very fit usually, and did not keep going to the doctor's. It will be interesting to see if this project takes off.”

“I'm in that age bracket and have a problematic hip. My GP just gives a prescription. The tablets side-effects gives more problems.

I'm not holding my breath too, for dramatic improvments how the over 65s are neglected.”

“I welcome the move. But won't hold my breath waiting for results. My Mum is 89 and although quite independent lives in a rural community. She needs some support other than what the family and excellent neighbours can provide. Trying to get such help is a full time occupation for my brother in the UK.

I wonder how many staff salaries will be taken out of the small budget set aside for this worthwhile project.”
