A TOTAL of 160 healthy dogs has been put down in Nottingham in the past 18 months because there are too many abandoned animals to re-home.

Most of the dogs have not shown any aggression.

But over-breeding and irresponsible ownership means more animals than ever are being abandoned, putting a huge strain on resources.

Over the past 18 months, 160 dogs of various breeds – but mostly Staffordshire bull terriers – have been put down in Nottingham.

Dog control officers – all animal lovers – are frustrated and angry but say they have no choice.

Zoë Bestall, an officer who took two young Staffordshire bull terrier cross breeds to be put down by a vet last week, said: "Now we're putting puppies and young dogs to sleep because there are too many.

"I feel very sad and disheartened by that.

"We can't find homes for them all. That's the frustrating thing we can't get across to people who say 'you're killers' and 'you don't like Staffies,' but we're flooded out with them."

Half the 72 dogs needing new homes at Babbington Hall Kennels, near Awsworth, are Staffordshire bull terrier breeds.

Owner Tony Sanderson, who is calling for regulated licensing for breeders, said: "Two years ago the Staffy problem really mushroomed and since then we've not had any space. Before that we could be half empty."

Notts and Derby Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club shares the concerns.

Secretary Helen Reaney said: "We wholly agree there is an issue of over-breeding and irresponsible owners."

“diverongas.. I would.... Nothing that some people say or do surprises me anymore...

& being nasty to or about dumb defenceless (& healthy) animals who are having to be killed through no fault of their own, is just typical of the worst type of people.. The heartless ones..”

“Probably some of the pavements will be a little cleaner now, that sounds bad don't it, but,
I'm sorry for the dogs though, just the people who owned them that wouldn't clean up after them, they are not fit enough to own dogs they've got no hearts and they certainly don't think about other people.”

“I see there are some very ignorant views on here, people give up all types of dogs for many reasons, and they are not all uncaring or irresponsible owners; given the current economic climate many are out of work and struggling to survive, so are forced give up their animals. Problems with staffies are many and varied, there are the unscrupulous breeders overbreeding them, and the lack of regulation within breeding, but licensing would only affect the legitimate breeders, it would not stop a black market breeding operation occuring. Staffies come in two types, those with responsible and understanding owners, and those chavs and scratties who train them to be vicious animals.
Decent owners generally have the nice well trained animals which are no threat, and the scratties are the ones giving the entire breed a bad name, equally any breed of dog can bite and do considerable damage if it is trained to so by idiotic owners.”

“diverongas.. "A scrattie is someone who owns a staffie".... Right, so the only reason they,re called a scrattie is because they own a staffie.. & if they owned another breed of dog, they wouldnt be called a scrattie?.. Have I managed to grasp the concept?..

Is this startling discovery common knowledge, or have you just made it up to suit your purpose?

Oh, & have you a link for statistics that prove your prejudice?..”

“Some sad comments. These poor dogs do not ask to be born, neither do they get a choice who owns them. Certain types gravitate towards these dogs hence their reputation and breeders go unregulated. Unfortunately these dogs are trained, often cruelly, to be aggressive, then cast off when the novelty wears off.
The dogs that bite humans though are of no particular breed and probably bite because their owners are unable to handle them or understand what they need. When it comes down to it they need plenty of exercise which many do not get. As regards the comments on cats, are they really necessary?
The only answer is to stop breeding all these animals into a life of misery. All owners should be responsible for neutering their pet. It is not that expensive and vouchers are available from many charities. If there were fewer of them then they would be valued by their owners and so much unnecessary suffering would end.”

“A scrattie is someone who owns a staffie, lives in a grey tracksuit and scratches his nuts in Tesco's.”
